What Kind of Church Are You?

Lexington Christian Fellowship traces its roots to a Bible study which began at the University of Kentucky in 1974. A few college students gathered in Haggin Hall as freshmen with a desire to know God more intimately and to make Him known to others. The Bible study grew and functioned as a small fellowship of about 20 people for several years. It met on Friday nights and was known simply as "Friday Night Fellowship."

Billy Henderson, who had been part of the study since the beginning, became the pastor when the group realized that God was calling them to become more than just a fellowship. In 1980, LCF organized as a church within the university community.

Over the following years, members of the fellowship were able to minister to many students. Many of these felt called to stay and be a part of the local church. As people married and the Lord began to add children to the families, a more diverse group of people began to call LCF their home.

Ministry to children developed; people from the community began to find the church; outreach to the University continued. God faithfully blessed and increased the group.

In 1989 Woodland Avenue Baptist Church offered to share their building with LCF. At that time, we left the Student Center at the University and began to meet at Woodland's facility. Since that time the group has planted two other small congregations: Jessamine Christian Fellowship and Trinity Christian Fellowship.

Through the years we have developed several ministries that touch a larger portion of the body of Christ and the world. As always we still reach out to the university community. We also publish a biannual tabloid called the University Christian, which reaches the hands of about 10,000 students. We have definite missions commitments to Central America, primarily to pastor Pedro Basilio and the church in southern Mexico. We have also begun a small Jr. and Sr. High Academy, which serves about 70 students.

Our chief desire is to continue to serve the Lord by serving one another and the greater body of Christ.
